TED talks have been around for many years, inspiring and motivating people into making positive changes in their life. Whether you watch them in your spare time or have them playing in the background, there’s always something that draws you to a particular video, and something is bound to resonate with you. As awe-inspiring as TED talks are online, they’re much more touching in person, allowing attendees to really question what’s being said and take onboard any helpful life tips and tricks. But how can TED talks make a difference in person, and how can you encourage someone to attend one?

A Different Experience

TED talks are fun for everyone, and really encourage their audiences to think about what they’ve heard. They combine opinion, technology and lived experience to bring inspiring stories and theological perspectives. By attending a TED talk, you can actually learn something about life and experiences, as it forces you to really listen rather than passively pay attention as you go about your daily businesses when watching online.

Here at TEDxDoncaster, our upcoming event ‘Positive Disruptor’ seeks to challenge current societal constructs, providing a solution that leads to new ways of thinking, behaving, conducting business, learning, understanding and living life. It brings together thinkers, doers, innovators and pioneers who will share their stories of tackling closed-minded tactics, whether it be in business or in everyday life. To get your tickets, please visit us here.

A New Perspective

Forget what you think you know; TED talks have the power to change your point of view and make you see certain aspects in a different light. Even the most stubborn of people have been encouraged to open their eyes to different perspectives through TED talks. It’s no exaggeration how inspiring these talks can truly be, with some deep topics, some fun and engaging. TED even provide youth events to get young people more involved and open their eyes to a great new world.

TEDxDoncaster are working to inspire and educate the people of this amazing town, through talks and speeches worth attending. If you would like to get involved, whether that’s to volunteer or speak at one of our events, please visit us here.

Iceland has made headlines recently with the declaration of the world’s biggest trial of a 4-day workweek in the public sector being labeled as a resounding success.

More than 2,500 workers switched to a 35/36-hour workweek and the results were staggering. The majority of individuals involved in this experiment reported that they felt happier, healthier and less stressed.

Due to these motivating results, Iceland is now moving to make this a permanent feature for the majority of its workforce.

The ‘Rat Race’

This experiment goes against everything we’ve come to believe about the modern world, especially in Western society.

It seems that the 4-day working week isn’t just for the public sector, it also appeals to many private companies that are opting towards the shorter workweek. By doing so, they are finding out that the work being produced is less distracted and gives people more time for leisure activities.

Shorter workweeks allowed for increased productivity and creativity in each individual’s work endeavours, improved recruitment and retention with employees. Overall, job satisfaction increased dramatically, with both founders and leaders feeling less burnout from being at work. This creates a more balanced and sustainable life for workers, all without cutting salaries or reducing the standard of customer service.

The implementation of a shorter workweek would give employees the opportunity to better balance their career commitments and the goals they have for their personal lives. One of the most significant driving forces towards a marginalised workweek is the policies surrounding childcare. Most employees who take time off are women needing the time off to cater for their children.

A 4-day workweek would eliminate the gendered gap, providing a more equitable approach to accommodating the needs of employees with strict familial values.

By narrowing the working week, we can actually see engagement levels rise significantly. While an ultimately happy workforce might seem a long way off, providing a flexible schedule will do wonders for the morale of the employees, no matter the role or level of seniority.

A shortened workweek also means that employees are less inclined to take as many sick days, or days off due to stress. Since there is more time spent outside of the office, they have the opportunity to rest, heal and recover, meaning they can get back to work ready to onboard new challenges and tasks.

When TEDx makes it way to your town or city, it can be an exciting and fulfilling experience. The opportunity to expand your horizons and gain a better understanding of the world we live in can allow people to learn more than what they see constantly on the news and in their surroundings. When you make the decision to attend a TEDx event, there are certain points you need to remember going forward.

Here at TEDxDoncaster, we’re incredibly excited to bring the inspiring world of TED to the local community. With a range of diverse speakers gracing the stage, we hope to bring an array of voices and experiences to those who wish to discover more about the world. Read our article below to discover what you need to remember when attending an event.

Keep and Open Mind

When gaining perspective from another person’s point of view, it’s important to listen with an open mind. Most people have their opinions and like to stick to them religiously, and don’t even attempt to listen to those who oppose them. This can be incredibly dangerous, as it leads to your developing a closed mind, making you defensive to criticism and different viewpoints. By accepting others opinions and lived experiences, you can start to adapt and gain a broader understanding of other people.

Here at TEDxDoncaster, we aim to provide the local community with a broader understanding of the world, using the power of speech and technology. We encourage all kinds of people to join us at our events, in order to better themselves and learn about the world. You can view our schedule here.

Make Notes

If you find a particular talk thoroughly engaging, and you agree with what the person has got to say, don’t be afraid to make notes. Although it’s not customary to have your phone or an electronic device out, maybe take notes on some paper, or make mental notes if you can. You can use what others are saying to better yourself, and help you become more sympathetic to other people’s lived experiences.

Think About What You’ve Learnt

The main objective of a TED talk or TEDx event is to leave people feeling like they’ve learnt something. They can be inspiring and engaging, leaving the wider public with more knowledge of the world around them. When you leave an event, think about the deeper meaning of the talk, and what you were meant to take away. Looking back helps you think more deeply about the subject, and will therefore stick on your mind for a long time to come.

Here at TEDxDoncaster, we aim to provide the town with a better knowledge and understanding of other cultures and people. To find out more about us, please visit us here.

If you’ve been online for the past decade, you’ve probably already come across the infamous TED talks that have been inspiring and motivating people across the world. TED are a non-profit organisation formed in 1984 by Richard Saul Wurman, who observed that the convergence of technology, entertainment and design could amount to the powerful spread of useful, engaging information.

Self-described as a ‘global community,’ TED works to provide individuals around the world with a better understanding of worthwhile topics; ranging from societal issues to human rights and education. With the belief in the power to change lives and attitudes, TED talks work to enlighten and enrich people’s lives to give them a better understanding of how others live and operate.

TEDx

A branch belonging to the TED family, TEDx is an event held in a town or city where speakers are invited to share their wisdom and knowledge with attendees willing to gain a broader perspective of the world. TEDx talks are fully independent and unique, all with the powerful, fulfilling properties that all TED talks encompass.

When you attend a TEDx event, you should expect a range of talks, demonstrations and performances; all crafted to inspire and inform. Talks are not made to market any particular brand or product and do not strive to push any political or religious agenda. TED talks simply exist to enrich the public’s minds and introduce them to a perspective that they may not have found themselves.

Our organisation here at TEDxDoncaster is working to provide the thriving local area with more opportunities for the sharing of inspiration and knowledge. Thanks to the inspiring and amazing talks being held at TEDxSheffield and TEDxBrayfordPool, our branch of TEDx was developed and allowed to thrive and inspire the people of Doncaster with a series of motivational talks.

TED talks have been proven to inspire and motivate, and most talks last no longer than 18 minutes. If you would like more information concerning talks happening in your area, you can view our schedule here.

From an MSc graduate at the University of Hull to a leading educator of the youth in South Yorkshire and Senior partner at RedEverywhere Doncaster, Marcus has developed and enhanced a range of skills used to create new programs, services and giving TEDx Doncaster a platform to flourish.

In this article, we delve deeper into the interpretations that Marcus has towards TEDxDoncaster, what sparked his desire for this line of work, future goals and his very own definition of success.

TEDxDoncaster; Origins

It appears the curation and development of TEDxDoncaster sprouted from a moment of initiative and progressive thinking from Marcus, back amongst the muffled chatter of creatives at TEDxSheffield and TEDxBrayfordPool.

Adopting the inspiration shared throughout the complex and amongst the TED team; Marcus shared his ideas on a South Yorkshire TED sibling, based in the heart of Doncaster.

After consultations with TED organisers, it became clear that hosting a TED event was the ultimate goal.

Doncaster’s High Melton college provided the scene for Marcus to enlist the brainpower of TED associates Wayne Sables and Maureen Sydney; two like-minded individuals that helped craft the foundations for the Doncaster site.

In the latter stages of 2017, a hosting application was submitted and the rest is history.

TEDxDoncaster; Bouncing Back From COVID-19 and Planning For the Future

The outbreak of COVID-19 sent shockwaves throughout the planet, bringing the world to its knees in the process. Families, businesses, health institutions and organisations of all shapes and sizes have felt the seismic effects of the virus.

TEDxDoncaster juggled similar struggles to organisations across the UK. Amongst the thick smoke of the unknown, it was unclear which way the business was heading.

The events that were scheduled to take place at the flagship site in 2020 have been put in the pipeline to take place later this year, in the fall of 2021.

The goal now is to revitalise the TED community throughout the local area and to also launch a TEDx Women line-up to events at the Cast Theatre.

Getting People Involved

TEDx is always on the lookout for new talented people to take to the stage. To share wonderful ideas and stories no matter how common or obscure.

In addition to a fresh network of motivational speakers; TEDxDoncaster welcomes partner organisations that have an interest in growing their web of sponsors. This can be through partnerships or through the sponsorship of one of our events.

TEDx Doncaster offers an invitation to people from all walks of life who come from a range of different backgrounds and have varied views, beliefs and disciplines. The Cast Theatre opens its doors later this year to host the theme ‘Positive Disruptor’. If you feel like you have an idea worth sharing, have a passion for public speaking or simply want to get involved with the local community; fill out a nomination form to put yourself forward, or, nominate someone that matches the criteria.

What is Your Definition of Success?

Spearheaded by Marcus Isman-Egal, the TEDxDoncaster planning team have a streamlined path to success; selling out all events at the flagship site, starting with TEDxYouth and following on to each and every event hosted at the Cast Theatre.

To extend upon our definition of success, we are determined to grow the TED community within Doncaster. We want to create a platform to host idea exchange, collaboration and innovation.

The key element of our success plan is finding amazing Doncastrians that have an idea worth spreading, amazing people who are thinkers, innovators and doers.

Since the 1980s, TED has been offering inspiring and innovative talks and events across the globe. From hard-hitting topics to current events, TED talks have risen in popularity, with the 20 minutes segments available to view online. Its international recognition has inspired TED to branch out the cities within the UK with it’s “X” programme.

Aimed at bringing wisdom and inspiration to small towns and large cities, TEDx has recently added Doncaster to its ever-growing ranks. When you attend a TEDx event, you should expect a range of talks, demonstrations and performances all crafted to inspire and inform. Talks are not made to market any particular brand or product and do not strive to push any political or religious agenda.

In this post, social entrepreneur, disruptor and TEDx curator Marcus Isman Egal discusses where TEDxDoncaster originated from:

“For me, TEDxDoncaster began at TEDxSheffield and TEDxBrayfordPool with their creativity, energy and the ideas shared that galvanised my desire to follow in their footsteps and host a TEDx event.

Talking with the event organisers, I knew that I wanted to be one of them. After a few weeks of research and reflection, I contacted the organisers to explore how I could organise and curate a TEDx event in Doncaster.

A meeting with Maureen Sydney and Wayne Sables at High Melton College in 2017 was to further turbo-charge my commitment to hosting a TEDx event in Doncaster. It was a meeting of like-minded fellow TEDxers, and I thought, ‘what an exciting time.’

Later that year I submitted my application to host a TEDx event in Doncaster. One of the biggest life lessons I have learned is resilience and the ability to move forward in the face of uncertainty.

In April 2019, after two years of planning and two rejections, we finally received the decision we all had been waiting for; TED had granted Wayne and me the license to curate and organise TEDxDoncaster!

This was it, and now everything started to become real.

During this period, I met some incredible people. Successful entrepreneurs, event planners and influential figures in the local community, all who wanted to be involved and lend a hand.

We have now completed the first phase in preparing for TEDxDoncaster. We booked a venue, tickets went on sale and on Monday 25th June, we finally agreed on our TEDxDoncaster line up. It’s been a fantastic journey so far, and working with the planning group means I’m not on my own but part of a fantastic group of custodians who are leading the way for others to follow.

As a planning group, we have shared our experiences and ideas on curating the best event for our Doncaster. I would definitely say that leading the TEDxDoncaster family has been one of the most exciting projects of 2019.

In May of 2019, the TEDxDoncaster team has expanded to host TEDxYouth Doncaster. We hope to expand this group in the future, and appeal to the youth of Doncaster through exciting talks and presentations.”

Since its origins back in 1984, TED has been a platform for a range of different people advocating for change and attempting to present the world with a collection of different viewpoints. The 20-minute segments involve a particular topic of which an individual person speaks about. With an aim to present worldwide audiences with access to education and a wider perspective on different matters, TED has been a staple for inspiring and enlightening.

TEDx attempts to bring the world of TED to smaller towns and cities and has now been introduced to Doncaster. The talks can be a great opportunity to acknowledge and experience different viewpoints on a range of topics they may never have ventured to explore. Read our article below to learn more about the importance of TEDx.

Gaining a Wider Perspective

One of the most important factors of TED is that it allows people to step out of their mental comfort zones. Some people are content in sticking to the mindset they’ve built up over the years, usually influenced by their family, friends and social experiences. However, the initiative to branch out and explore other viewpoints shows that you’re willing to learn and respect what others have to say. TED talks are a perfect opportunity to expand your horizons gain a broader perspective, and with TEDx, you can even attend one in person.

TEDx Doncaster aims to bring the people of this wonderful city a chance to delve into the opinions and mindsets of other people, in order to make sure that they are more cultured than when they first became exposed to TED. We hope to hold talks frequently throughout the year, of which all individuals are invited. You can view our schedule here.

Education

As human beings, it’s in our nature to be curious or afraid of things we don’t understand; like a fight or flight response. The more we learn about the world, the more we can relate to other people and get a wider perspective of different struggles and experiences. Popular discussions usually involve racism, homophobia and gender issues, as they’re incredibly contemporaneous subjects that more people wish to learn more about. By attending a TEDx talk, you can expose yourself to the wider world, and learn more about the lives and experiences of other people.

TED talks are widely accessible online and last around 20 minutes. TEDx events allow people from smaller cities and towns to experience a talk in-person, giving them the opportunity to immerse themselves in the knowledge and wisdom they offer.

Short and Sweet

In most people’s cases, no one really likes to be lectured. Talks that can last over an hour tend to drag on, and most people won’t retain all the information that is presented to them. At TED, our talks are 20 minutes long, giving you the opportunity to fully take in all the knowledge that is presented to you.

Here at TEDxDoncaster, we hope to present many different and inspiring guests to individuals hoping to gain a better understanding of the world. To find out more, please visit our website here.
